African Industrial Benchmark | Photovoltaic-Storage-Diesel Off-Grid Microgrid Solution

Off-grid industrial sites often rely heavily on diesel generation despite abundant solar resources, resulting in high operating costs and limited renewable energy utilization. Integrating solar, energy storage, and diesel generation through a unified microgrid can provide more stable and efficient power for continuous industrial operations.

Building a Stable and Reliable Autonomous Power Supply System for Off-Grid Industrial Applications

In some parts of Africa, industrial enterprises have long relied on diesel power generation for production and operations due to insufficient grid coverage and limited power supply capacity. With the continuous rise in fuel costs, relying solely on diesel power not only results in high operating costs but also makes it difficult to meet modern industry’s requirements for power supply stability and energy efficiency.

At the same time, while the region is rich in solar resources, the lack of a unified energy management system often results in photovoltaic, energy storage, and diesel power generation equipment operating independently. This limits the utilization of renewable energy and prevents the full realization of the synergistic benefits of multi-energy integration.

For off-grid industrial scenarios, YUNT provides a comprehensive PV-storage-diesel microgrid solution. By coordinating the operation of photovoltaic systems, energy storage, diesel generators, and a smart energy management system, we build a safe, stable, and efficient autonomous power supply system for our customers, ensuring continuous production operations.

Scenario Requirements: Ensuring Continuous Industrial Production

Off-grid industrial users typically face:

  • Insufficient grid coverage or unstable power supply;
  • High power quality requirements for production equipment;
  • High operating costs for diesel generators;
  • Abundant solar resources but limited utilization rates.

The project aims to achieve:

  • Multi-energy coordinated power supply;
  • Reduced reliance on diesel-powered generation;
  • Increase the utilization rate of new energy sources;
  • Ensure the stable operation of production equipment.

Therefore, a microgrid system capable of adapting to complex operating conditions and centrally coordinating various energy sources is required.

System Solution: Building a Solar-Storage-Diesel Coordinated Microgrid

YUNT, taking into account the characteristics of industrial loads, provides integrated services ranging from solution design and equipment integration to on-site commissioning.

Project Integration:

  • 375 kW grid-forming power conversion system(PCS);
  • 500 kW STS switching system;
  • 6 units of 60 kW PV MPPT inverters;
  • 125 kW / 261 kWh energy storage system;
  • EMS Energy Management Platform.

Through a unified control platform, the system enables intelligent coordination among PV, energy storage, diesel generation, and loads.

The system automatically optimizes operating strategies based on power generation conditions and production load:

During daytime production:

  • PV power takes priority in meeting production load;
  • Excess electricity is stored in the energy storage system;
  • The system increases the utilization of renewable energy.

During periods of load fluctuations:

  • Energy storage rapidly responds to power fluctuations;
  • Smoothesout equipment startup surges;
  • Reduces the operational load on diesel generators.

Off-grid operation phase:

  • Grid-forming PCS autonomously maintains stable voltage and frequency;
  • Coordinated power supply from solar, storage, and diesel generators;
  • Continuously ensures the operation of critical production equipment.

The system is designed to withstand the high temperatures and dusty conditions typical of Africa, meeting the requirements for long-term outdoor operation.

Project Value: Building an Autonomous Industrial Energy System

Through the solar-storage-diesel microgrid system, the project helps the client reduce diesel power generation costs, improve photovoltaic energy utilization, and enhance industrial production’s ability to operate independently of the external power grid.

The solution not only enhances the reliability of power supply for production but also enables intelligent management of the energy system, providing robust support for the enterprise’s sustained and stable production.

This project fully demonstrates YUNT’s technical capabilities in off-grid industrial applications, multi-energy coordination, and microgrid system integration. It can be widely applied to manufacturing plants, processing parks, resource development sites, and other off-grid industrial scenarios, providing mature and reliable energy storage system solutions for overseas industrial clients.
