African Remote Mining: Modular Microgrids for Weak Grids

Remote mining sites in Africa often face a difficult combination of unstable grid conditions and heavy industrial loads. Large pumps, ventilation systems, conveyors, and crushers can create severe power disturbances when starting or operating under a weak grid. For these sites, a properly designed modular hybrid microgrid system can provide a more reliable power architecture by coordinating PV, energy storage, diesel generation, and power conversion equipment.

Critical Disturbances from Weak Mining Grids and Selection Blind Spots

Across Africa’s vast remote mining areas, not all facilities are completely disconnected from the public grid. A more common reality is an extremely vulnerable “weak grid,” characterized by severely insufficient grid capacity, significant voltage fluctuations, continuously drifting frequency, and frequent unplanned power outages. At the same time, mining loads can be extremely demanding, including heavy motor-driven equipment such as high-power water pumps, ventilation fans, belt conveyors, and crushers. Every grid disturbance or motor start can cause a voltage drop, directly interrupting production and resulting in extremely high costs from downtime and equipment damage.

Under these operating conditions, many project owners have a serious blind spot when selecting an energy storage converter (PCS): they focus only on the rated power shown on the nameplate while completely overlooking the need for localized adaptation to real electrical environments overseas. If a PCS does not have strong weak-grid operating capabilities and compatibility with parallel diesel generator operation, it may frequently report faults and shut down after being connected to a mining site, or even suffer severe equipment damage. In addition, some mining areas use 11kV/33kV medium-voltage distribution, meaning that the system must also be properly matched with a step-up transformer for connection.

Core Solution: Grid-Forming Technology and a Modular Microgrid Architecture

For large mining areas, microgrid construction does not necessarily need to cover the entire mining site at once. For independent mining areas, pumping stations, residential camps, or primary processing units, a 500kW–2MW modular microgrid can be an engineering approach that balances cost-effectiveness and reliability. Multiple PCS units can be flexibly connected in parallel to build a local microgrid power center.

In weak-grid or long-term off-grid scenarios, a grid-forming/VSG PCS is a key hardware foundation for the success of the entire microgrid. Under a strong grid, the grid provides the voltage and frequency reference. However, under weak-grid or islanded conditions at a mining site, the grid-forming PCS acts as a “virtual synchronous generator” (VSG), actively establishing the voltage and frequency reference for the entire microgrid.

With its extremely fast response, the PCS can instantly absorb or compensate for transient high-power impacts caused by motor starting, enabling stable parallel operation of PV, energy storage, and diesel generators under extremely demanding operating conditions.

Within this architecture:

  • PVis responsible for providing low-cost renewable energy.
  • The diesel generatorprovides heavy-load backup during extended periods without sufficient sunlight.
  • The PCSundertakes the power conversion function of the entire microgrid and provides a stable foundation for its operation.
