Construction projects in Singapore and other developed Southeast Asian cities face a difficult energy challenge. Loads such as tower cranes, heavy-duty welding machines, and large air compressors can fluctuate sharply, while strict controls on construction-site noise and emissions place additional demands on power supply systems. An energy storage inverter company can provide the power conversion foundation needed for integrating energy storage into these demanding applications. A diesel-storage hybrid microgrid can help balance these requirements by allowing energy storage to handle short-term fluctuations while diesel generators operate under more suitable load conditions.

ToggleThe Energy Challenge of Urban Construction: Load Surges and Strict Environmental Controls
For EPC projects in the urban areas of Singapore and other developed Southeast Asian countries, construction sites are filled with equipment such as tower cranes, heavy-duty welding machines, and large air compressors. These loads are extremely volatile: they require almost no power when idle but can generate huge surge currents the moment they start.
Traditional construction solutions rely entirely on high-power diesel generators for electricity supply, which directly creates two serious problems. First, during nighttime or periods of low demand, diesel generators are forced to operate at very low load levels. Incomplete combustion leads to high fuel consumption and increased carbon emissions. Second, when a tower crane suddenly begins lifting, the load can rise sharply within an instant, forcing the diesel generator to withstand substantial mechanical and electrical shocks. This can easily result in black smoke and accelerate equipment wear.
More importantly, modern cities impose extremely strict statutory controls on construction-site noise pollution and exhaust emissions. As a result, conventional diesel-only power supply models are becoming increasingly difficult to sustain.
For projects that need a more flexible approach, commercial energy storage systems can be integrated with diesel generation to better match power supply with changing site loads.
Core Solution: 500kW-Class Diesel-Storage Hybrid Operation and Peak Shifting
A diesel-storage hybrid microgrid provides an effective engineering solution to this challenge. In an implemented off-grid construction project in Singapore, we deployed a 500kW/500kWh-class diesel-storage coordinated system. The system uses an ATS automatic transfer switch and grid-forming PCS to achieve coordinated scheduling between energy storage and the diesel generator.
Low-load silent operation: During nighttime or light-duty work periods, such as welding and lighting, the system completely shuts down the diesel generator and allows the energy storage system to supply 100% of the power independently. This eliminates nighttime construction noise and exhaust emissions, helping the contractor meet municipal environmental requirements more easily.
Heavy-load peak shaving and coordination: When the load rises rapidly, such as when multiple tower cranes start simultaneously, and exceeds the output limit of the energy storage system, the system automatically starts the diesel generator and connects it to the load. At this point, the energy storage PCS, with millisecond-level response, is responsible for handling the impact of rapidly fluctuating loads, while the diesel generator supplies a stable high-power base load within a more efficient fuel-consumption range.
This approach directly reduces the amount of time the diesel generator operates under low-load conditions, significantly lowering fuel procurement and routine maintenance costs while providing the construction site with a more stable and high-quality power supply.
